Kings and Queens
The Queen and the Royal Family
The present Queen of England, Elizabeth 2nd has ruled for some 50 years and few people want to get rid of her and turn the country into a republic. This is Inspite of some vocal critics saying she is aloof and remote from the man in the street. Perhaps a King or Queen should be?

Some little time ago this royal family produced a fairy princess in the form of Princess Diana. The heir to the throne Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth 2nd married her. Some say the best thing he ever did. Princess Diana had been a commoner that is she was not closely related to any Royal Family but she was certainly "one of the people". She died in a car crash in Paris when fleeing newspaper photographers with her Egyptian "lover" England wept. Gone was the girl the people saw as their next queen, absolutely right for the start of the second millennium.

England, lead by Parliament, is sure to debate the role of the future monarch particularly as with all un-elected hereditary positions the automatic candidate may not always be ideal.

In the year 2001 this problem was not considered an election issue.

If you are under 16 read this!
For the younger reader comparing the world today with the world of yesterday:---

Any stories from the past will look even more exiting or astonishing if you compare them with what you see around you today Take a look now and what do you see:

Your house, your home, nice and warm in winter and not too hot in the summer. (Central heating/Air conditioning)

Water on tap to drink, hot water on tap for your daily shower. (Clean water)

A warm bed. (All for yourself no need to share with the rest of the family)

The TV or course. How many channels do you have? 5? Boring! May be 105 or 500. DVD, Dad's digital camcorder, your Pokemon game or your Barbie make up set. (The electronic world)

Daily school, no weekly visits to church perhaps! A couple of big holidays a year, skiing and beach both miles away by jet plane. Weekend trips to football in Dad's air conditioned car and weekly to the supermarket where you think nothing of buying fresh fruit all the year round.

Dad does not beat you with a stick and neither does the school teacher. Perhaps you sometimes deserve it.

Or perhaps you do your weekly shopping on the World Wide Web. Do you have one PC or two? What's the speed of your modem? Do you have email, a colour printer and a colour scanner?

Both your parents go out to work, which one makes the most money? And what do they do with all this cash? Did you know that the government takes almost half of it? What do they do with the money? (your school/education, your doctor/to keep you healthy and much more of course.) (Without some schooling you could never get a job and its free)

Did you know that most of the things listed above did not happen 50 years ago.

Who is in charge of the country anyway? The Government? The King? The Church? The President? The Army? If you look around the world today you can find countries where there are examples of each one of the above. In the US it is the President, in England the Queen. Examples of the others are found all over Africa, Middle East and South East Asia.

Many battles have been fought in England in the last Millennium between King, Parliament and Church as to who rules.

Today in England the government is trying to decide what to do about Education. Yes they are worried about YOU!
